Causes of teeth sensitivity

Possible causes of sensitive teeth are:

  1. Tooth decay caused by cavities
  2. Fractured teeth
  3. Worn out tooth fillings
  4. Gum diseases
  5. Worn down tooth enamel
  6. Exposed teeth roots

In a healthy patient’s mouth, a layer of enamel protects the crowns of all the teeth— which is the part above the gum line. Under the gumline, a layer called cementum protects the teeth’s roots. Underneath both the enamel and the cementum is dentin.

Dentin is less dense than enamel and cementum and contains microscopic, hollow tubes or canals. When dentin loses its protective covering of enamel or cementum these tubules allow heat and cold or acidic or sticky foods to reach the nerves inside the tooth. Dentin may also become exposed when the gums recede. The result can be hypersensitivity.

Sensitive teeth can be treated. (Yay)!

The type of treatment will depend on what is causing the sensitivity.
Your dentist may suggest one of a variety of treatments, which include:

Desensitizing toothpaste
contains compounds that help block the transmission of sensations from the teeth’s surfaces to the nerves. Usually requires several applications before the sensitivity is reduced

Fluoride gel
An in-office technique used to strengthen tooth enamel. Also reduces the transmission of sensations

A crown, inlay, or bonding
These may be used to correct flaws or decay that cause sensitivity. To learn more about bonding, please click here.

Surgical gum graft
If gum tissue has been lost from the root, a surgical gum graft will protect the root and reduce sensitivity

Root canal
If sensitivity is severe and persists, and can’t be treated by other means, your dentist may recommend this treatment to eliminate the problem
