6 worst food and drinks to cause teeth stains

If your goal is to make sure that you keep your oral health a large priority in your life than you absolutely looking at it from the best angle.  After all, making sure that you keep your mouth clean and healthy is critical to long-term quality of life, amongst other things.  The staining of foods is a large part of that, cosmetically as much as health-wise. While teeth whitening is widely available and recommended, knowing what is causing the staining is just as important.  Here are some of the worst foods that can create staining on the teeth so that you can avoid or minimize them as much as possible.

  • Pasta sauces: The first enemy to conquer is pasta sauce. Any kind of tomato sauce is going to create a stain on your teeth, so if you are looking to make sure that you keep your teeth stain-free, try eating dark green vegetables first to protect your teeth.  A salad is a great way to do that.

 

  • Curries: As much as you may love it, curry’s yellow pigment can be tricky for staining. It’s important to remember that you should mix in a lot of fruits and vegetables so that you can minimize the staining it will cause as much as possible.  This is one of the worst foods for staining, so be aware of that!

 

  • Balsamic Vinegar: The natural colour of Balsamic vinegar is pretty dark, so if you are prone to eating that, you’ll find your tooth shade darkening as well As with the above options, eating dark vegetables like kale is great for protecting your teeth from the stains that they can leave, so go ahead and fill up on the dark vegetables ahead of time.

 

  • Berries: A lot of berries are tricky because the deep colours in berries such as cranberries and blackberries can create staining regardless of how you eat them (in jam, or whole). You should always try to keep them from lingering in the mouth too long, and drink water or milk after ingesting them, as it will get rid of some of the staining effects.

 

  • Coffee or tea: Coffee and tea are bad for staining due to the fact that they are high in acid and tend to be dark in colour naturally as well. As such, you should minimize how much you drink and try your best to keep it from lingering in the mouth too long – though loving these beverages and wanting to savour them is entirely understandable.

 

  • Red wine: Red wine is probably the worse offender for staining on the teeth due to the fact that it has such a deep and potent colour to it. Always brush your teeth after drinking red wine and  and try to make sure that you keep the amounts (and dosages!) to a minimum.  This will help keep your teeth sparkling white.

If all of these foods and drinks are critical to your diet – or you don’t want to give them up, which is understandable – there are ways that you can minimize the effects of them.  Firstly, you should always brush your teeth after ingesting them, before which you should drink a glass of water to get as much of it out of your mouth as possible.  After brushing your teeth, use a rinse of some kind of ensure that all remnants of it are out of your teeth and mouth, stopping any staining hat might occur after the fact.
