Dental Plaque

What is this stuff? Where does it come from?

Dental plaque
Plaque is a sticky substance that is made from leftover food particles and saliva mixing in your mouth. If you don’t brush your teeth properly, it forms and continues to build up on your teeth.
This is a problem.

Plaque contains bacteria that contribute to tooth decay or gum disease.

On the bright side, it’s treatable and preventable. Brushing twice a day will help immensely, particularly along the gumline. Using a fluoride toothpaste, flossing, using an antibacterial mouth rinse, and going to the dentist every 6 months for a checkup and teeth cleaning are all tactics to keep plaque under control!

Eating a balanced diet and limiting the number of snacks you eat are great ways to prevent plaque build up. When you really need a snack, choose plain yogurt, cheese, fruit, or vegetables. Celery is a wonderful choice because it removes food and helps your saliva neutralize acids that cause plaque.

Plaque is a cause of periodontal diseases. If plaque is left on the tooth for few hours, the bacteria can start damaging the gums or produce acids that may cause dental cavities. Preventing plaque deposition and accumulation is a great strategy to minimize oral diseases and infection.
