5 Simple Steps to Achieve Oral Health Excellence

More and more people are being diagnosed with periodontal (gum) disease. In fact, it is estimated that over 90% of adults have some form of gum disease. The earliest stage of gum disease is characterized by inflammation of the gums surrounding the teeth.

In its early stages, gum disease is easily controlled with good oral hygiene, including regular brushing, flossing, and maintaining a healthy mouth. Gum disease develops as a result of plaque buildup—a sticky, soft film that forms on teeth. Plaque can usually be removed with daily brushing and flossing. However, if it is not removed promptly, it can harden into calculus (tartar), which is much more difficult to remove with brushing alone.

Plaque and calculus contain harmful bacteria that cause swollen, bleeding gums. If left untreated, this can progress to periodontitis, a more advanced and serious form of gum disease.

Why Periodontitis Is a Serious Concern

Periodontitis involves infection and inflammation of the supporting bone around the teeth. Over time, this can lead to permanent bone loss and, in severe cases, tooth loss. Research in dental and medical literature has also shown links between gum disease and overall health, including increased risks of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

5 Simple Steps for a Healthier Smile

1. Brush Your Teeth at Least Twice a Day

Brushing is essential for maintaining good oral health. It removes plaque from the teeth and along the gumline while also stimulating the gums.

Use caution when brushing—many studies have shown that hard-bristled toothbrushes can damage tooth enamel and contribute to gum recession. A soft-bristled toothbrush is the safest and most effective option.

2. Floss Before Bedtime

Flossing is just as important as brushing. Many cavities form between teeth—areas that brushing alone cannot reach. Flossing helps prevent interproximal decay by removing food particles and plaque from between the teeth.

Regular flossing also reduces gum inflammation and contributes to healthier gums and fresher breath.

3. Keep Your Regular Dental Appointments

Many dental problems can be prevented or treated early with routine dental visits. The Canadian Dental Association recommends seeing your dentist at least twice a year.

During a recall appointment, both the hard tissues (teeth) and soft tissues (gums and oral tissues) are examined. Early signs of decay or enamel softening can often be reversed with improved oral hygiene. If a cavity is detected early, it can usually be treated while it is still small and manageable.

4. Eat a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet supports a healthy body—and healthy teeth. Diets rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins help maintain strong teeth and gums.

Bacteria in the mouth feed on carbohydrates and produce acids that weaken tooth enamel. The more sugar and refined carbohydrates consumed, the more acid is produced. Processed and packaged foods often contain hidden sugars, increasing the risk of enamel erosion and cavities.

5. Follow Additional Dental Instructions as Needed

Some recommendations are common sense, such as limiting alcohol consumption and avoiding smoking. In other cases, your dentist may prescribe specific treatments—for example, a medicated mouthwash for frequent cavities or more frequent cleanings for patients with advanced gum disease.

Following personalized dental instructions can make a significant difference in maintaining long-term oral health.

A healthy smile starts with simple daily habits. By following these five steps, you can protect your teeth, your gums, and your overall health for years to come.
