How Can Dental Bonding Help?

Dental bonding is recommended when a tooth is weakened due to chips, cracks, or decay. Some patients present with dental emergencies. The goal is to stop the progression of damage while strengthening the tooth so you can maintain normal chewing function and comfort.

For many patients, bonding is an excellent long-term solution. With proper care, results often last up to 10 years before touch-ups may be needed. It is affordable, conservative, and ideal for minor to moderate repairs.

What Is the Process?

Here’s what you can expect before, during, and after your dental bonding appointment.

Before the Appointment

Dental bonding is a minor procedure, especially compared to veneers or crowns.
In cases of severe damage—particularly on back teeth that experience heavy chewing forces—other options may be more appropriate, but for minor repairs, bonding is typically completed in one visit.

No special preparation is required.

During the Appointment

1. Tooth Preparation:
   The dentist will gently roughen the tooth surface using a handpiece to help the resin adhere properly. Depending on sensitivity, a local anaesthetic may be recommended.
   
2. Colour Matching:
   Your dental assistant will prepare the composite resin and match it precisely to your natural tooth shade.
   
3. Application:
   The dentist shapes and sculpts the resin directly onto the tooth to recreate its natural form.
   
4. Hardening:
   A curing light is used to harden the material. You may be asked to bite down so the dentist can make final adjustments and smooth any excess.
   

The entire procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes per tooth.

After the Appointment

It’s normal to feel slightly aware of the bonded area at first—your mouth is sensitive to small changes. Within a few days, the tooth will feel completely natural.

Risks to Be Aware Of

While dental bonding is safe and effective, there are a few considerations:

• Staining:
  Avoid coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco for the first 48 hours, as the resin can stain before it fully settles.
  
• Durability:
  Composite bonding is strong but not as durable as porcelain. Patients with heavy bite forces, bruxism (teeth grinding), or severely weakened teeth may require alternative treatments.
  
• Maintenance:
  Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits help maintain the bonding’s colour and integrity.
